Playing With Peace: A lesson From NFL Legend Lorenzo Alexander

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” — Galatians 5:22-23

For much of his football career, Lorenzo Alexander believed he had to play angry. Like many athletes, he was told that intensity and aggression were the key to success—whether it came from blasting hype music, manufacturing anger, or forcing a mindset that wasn’t truly there.

But everything changed when he came to Christ.

“Why do I have to muster this up versus really tapping into the spirit when the fruits of the spirit are more than enough” – Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo realized he no longer needed to manufacture emotions to perform at his best. Instead of tapping into anger, he could tap into the Holy Spirit.

The fruit of the Spirit became his fuel, and it transformed the way he played. He no longer felt exhausted from trying to force an edge that wasn’t there. Instead, he found himself playing with more clarity, more consistency, and most importantly, more purpose. Which helped lead him to an amazing 15-year career where he was elected to the Pro-Bowl twice.

How often do we try to force something that God never intended for us? Maybe it’s an attitude at work, a response to adversity, or a false sense of control in our lives. But when we walk in step with the Spirit, we find that His power is more than enough.

Anger, anxiety, and striving wear us down. But God offers us something better. When we rely on Him, we don’t have to force energy, motivation, or success—because we have access to the ultimate source of strength living inside us.

REFLECTION:

  • Are there areas in your life where you’re trying to force something instead of relying on God?
  • What would it look like for you to operate with the fruit of the Spirit rather than human effort?
  • How can you tap into God’s power rather than your own today?

PRAYER:

Lord, I surrender my need to force emotions, success, or trying to control the situation. Fill me with Your Spirit so I can live, work, and compete with peace, patience, and purpose. Help me to trust that Your power is more than enough. Amen.
