THE Trap of "if only" faith

We often approach God with the mindset:

“God, if You want this to happen, you’re going to pave the way and it’s going to happen.”

It sounds like faith. It feels like trust. But sometimes, it’s actually control in disguise.

That’s what San Diego Padres coach Jed Morris vulnerably shared with us on the Identity Sports Podcast. He said it best:

“Instead of that mindset, I’m going to be like — God, whatever You give me, I’m going to do the best with.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

That shift in perspective? It changes everything.

As a coach in professional baseball, Jed Morris knows what it’s like to face pressure, pursue perfection, and live in a results-driven world. Early in his journey, Jed had a mindset many of us carry: If God wants it to happen, He’ll make it obvious—He’ll clear the path.

But that perspective began to shift.

“He gives us a process—read your Bible and pray.
And if you don’t trust in that to be enough… then you start to look at your circumstances to be the reason why you’re going to have a relationship with Him.” – Jed Morris

For Jed, the breakthrough came when he stopped treating God like a performance evaluator and started walking with Him in the daily, ordinary rhythms of faith.

Our culture teaches us that results validate us. That more—more success, more influence, more proof—means we’re doing it right. But Jed reminds us there’s another way:

“He could want you to have all those blessings…
But He also wants your mindset to be that you’re just going to read your Bible, and you’re going to pray, and you’re going to stay humble, and you’re going to trust in Him—and that is enough.”

God may open doors and provide blessings—but the foundation has to be Him. Not what we achieve. Not what others think. Not what we’re waiting on.

“If you don’t believe that relationship with Him is enough, you’ll start responding to the world instead of responding to what He wants you to respond to,” Jed went on to say.

What about you? Are you walking with God for who He is—or just for what you hope He will give?

REFLECTION:

  • Where in your life have you been waiting for God to prove something before trusting Him?
  • Are you responding to pressure from the world or to the quiet leading of the Holy Spirit?
  • What would it look like this week to simply pray, read scripture, and trust that is enough?

PRAYER:

Lord, help me release the need to control outcomes. Teach me to stop waiting for perfect signs and instead trust the process You’ve given: prayer, scripture, humility, and faith. May I respond to You—not to pressure, performance, or fear. Let my life reflect that You are enough. Amen.

We are praying for YOU! Thank you for being a part of the Identity Sports community!

In Christ,
